Veg Box Question and Answer

Here you can find out all about our Veg Box Scheme including FAQs, delivery, what's in the box and more about CSAs.

Places on our veg box scheme are limited, buy yours now in our online ship to reserve your place.

Every week we pack boxes with a tasty range of seasonal produce. We choose a difference mix of staples, cooking veg and salad and put the best stuff in the boxes!

What is the veg box scheme?

We offer a weekly veg box
for up to 60 people and families living and working within 20 miles of our market garden. Each week we harvest veggies, salad and fruit from our market garden on Blackhaugh Community Farm* and pack them for distribution or collection by you.  If it's out of the season then we buy in produce from other market gardens or organic farms in the UK and Europe. See below for more about what's in the box.

Why should I sign up?

Getting a weekly veg bag is a great way to reduce your food miles, eat healthy, chemical free food and support ecological farming.  We guarantee the best value, biggest range and freshest produce to our box scheme members.  We grow more than 70 different things! It is a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) membership scheme which means you support us and you get great member benefits including farm tours,  BBQs and pizza nights at the farm and glut cooking/ preserving workshop sessions using our outdoor kitchen at Blackhaugh Community Farm. See below for more on CSAs.

What are the different options?
We have a small, regular and large veg box, plus a salad box. The regular is our "original" box and is great for a family or a couple who like veggies. We get through one in a week no problem with our family of four. If you live on your own then the small box may be for you and if you have a big family or munch loads of roots and greens then go for the large box. We are also running a salad box from July to September which will be just salad items - cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, pea shoots, spring onions and more.

How do I sign up?
Our Veg Box Scheme is is a subscription where you pay for the whole season up front or you pay monthly. In this way you become a member of the scheme and each week you receive a "share" in the produce.  You sign up by buying one of the options in our online shop.  You can pay up front for the whole season and get a box from June to December. This gets you an 8% discount and is really helpful for us because we know you are committed and we can plan for the season.  You can also pay monthly by standing order. This requires a £50 deposit which will cover the last month.

How does my box get to me?
You can pick up your box from Blackhaugh Community Farm where we grow the veggies. If you do then you can opt for a "pack your own" box which gives you a bit more choice and means you can be plastic free.

Away from the farm, we have collection points in Blairgowrie, Birnam, Bankfoot, Almondbank and Perth. Get in touch if you want more details about a pickup point. For a delivery fee you can have your box delivered straight to your door. We deliver to homes and collection points every Friday.  Scroll down the page to see a map of our delivery area.

Our box scheme helps to:
  • Reduce carbon emissions - We lock carbon into the soil by using no-dig practices, reduce food miles and waste by selling direct through short supply chains and we use minimal fossil fuels in producing our food.
  • Reduce packaging - We only use plastic when necessary and you can choose not to use any if you pick up from the farm.
  • Support the environment - We use ecological farming methods which improve the soil, increase habitats for wildlife & reduce the use of chemicals and intensive machinery.
  • Connects people to food production - through Community Supported Agriculture, volunteering and community events.
What's in the box? June to December:
A small box contains 6 or 7 items and a regular box contains 9 or 10 items and a large box contains 9 or 10 items with bigger portions.  Every week there will be a mix of:
  • leafy greens like chard or spinach
  • mixed salad and herbs
  • brassicas like cabbage, kale or broccoli
  • root veg like carrots, potatoes or beets
  • red/white onions, spring onions, shallots, leeks or garlic,
  • other seasonal veg; squash, courgette, tomatoes etc.
  • seasonal fruits e.g. rhubarb and currants

*Allowances can be made for allergies.

FAQ

What about holidays?

If you are away please ask for a friend to pick up your bag or we can donate it to Blairgowrie food bank.

What if I don't want courgettes?
It is difficult for us to individually tailor each veg bag but we will make exceptions in the case of allergies

Where do the veggies come from?
As much as possible all the contents of your veg bag will come from our market garden grown by our fair hands. Come and see in person if you like!  Later in the year we may have to supplement our veggies with others grown elsewhere. We will source them from other Scottish ecological market gardens when possible, otherwise they will be from organic farms in Scotland.

Where do you deliver to?

What is a CSA?
Community supported agriculture (CSA) is a partnership between farmers and consumers in which the responsibilities, risks and rewards of farming are shared, increasing the transparency and sustainability of our food system.

For us this means that our box scheme customers pay up front for a share in the harvest, either at the beginning of the year, or in instalments.  This gives us some level of security, which helps us manage the uncertainties we might experience over the growing season, from droughts to slug invasions.

In return, you have the opportunity to be directly involved with our farm through workshops, social events, volunteer sessions and our AGM where you can help make decisions about what and how we grow.  AND, you get a weekly veg box full of fresh, local produce grown by us!
